Repair or Make Your Own Jewellery

I have several jewellery repair kits available on Etsy. These are simple to use and only require basic tools, such as a pair of flat nose pliers, round nose pliers and wire cutters.

These kits can either be used to repair existing jewellery, or make something special of your own.

Below are simple step by step instructions for using the kits.

Earring Repair Kits

Product ID: R001 Silver plated & R002 Gold plated

  • Make your own earrings by adding your own beads or crystals to the headpin, then hold the top bead in place with your thumb and forefinger, and bend the headpin 90 degrees at the top of the bead.
  • Leave about 8mm of wire after the bead and then cut off the excess using wire cutters.
  • You can carefully file the rough edge of the wire using a needle file if you have one.
  • Position round nose pliers at the end of the wire and then, holding the bead in place between your thumb and forefinger, roll the wire around to form a loop.
  • To attach this to the earring open the loop sideways, using flat nose pliers tends to be easier, and tread the earring on, then close the loop back up again.  Ensure that the loop is even and that the end of the wire is neatly tucked in against the top of the bead, so that there are no rough edges exposed.

Clip On Earring Kit

Product ID: R012 Silver plated & R011 Gold plated

1 Pair of  Clip on Earrings (Picture shows one earring open & one closed)
2 Jump Rings
  • The idea behind this kit is that you can use the clip on earrings if you are making your own earrings, or if you want to convert a pair of earrings for pierced ears into clip-ons.  Though of course it will depend upon how the earrings are made originally as to whether the original earring can be removed from the dropper/beads.
  • The kit includes 2 jump rings which can be used to attach the dropper/beads.  To use the jump rings, open the ring sideways, this is easier if you have two pairs of pliers and can grip the ring either side of the opening. Gently pull one side towards you whilst holding the other side still.  Remember not to open the jump ring more than you need, as you don't want to distort the shape.
  • Thread the dropper/beads on to the jump ring and then add the clip-on earring.  You can then close the jump ring up again.

Cord Necklace Kits

Product ID:

Without cord : R003 Silver plated & R004 Gold plated
With cord : R005 Silver plated & R006 Gold plated

Kit contains:
1 Clasp
2 Coil Ends
2 Jump Rings

  • The coil ends included are useful when making a cord necklace, simply push the end of the cord in to the coil (the opposite end to the loop) and then using flat nose pliers and gently squeeze the last coil (again at the opposite end to the loop) until the cord is secure.
  • The clasp can be attached to the coil ends using the jump rings. To use the jump rings, open the ring sideways, this is easier if you have two pairs of pliers and can grip the ring either side of the opening. Gently pull one side towards you whilst holding the other side still. Remember not to open the jump ring more than you need, as you don't want to distort the shape.
  • Thread the loop of the coil on to the jump ring and then add the little loop on the clasp. You can then close the jump ring up again. Repeat the process to attach a jump ring to the other end of the necklace.

Necklace Repair Kits

These kits are ideal for re-stringing beaded necklaces.

Kit Contains:
18" Wire
2 Crimp Beads
2 Jump rings
1 Clasp

How to use this kit:
Thread a crimp bead on to one end of the nylon coated wire.  Then hold the wire next to the crimp bead and thread the end back through the bead to form a small loop. Using a crimping tool or a pair of flat nose pliers, gently squeeze the crimp bead closed.

Thread the beads on to the other end of the wire, then add the other crimp bead to the end, you can cut off the excess wire but ensure that you have left enough to enable you to form a loop.  To make this loop, hold the wire close to the crimp bead and thread the end of the wire through the crimp bead until you form a small loop.  Ensure that the end of the wire is threaded through the beads and does not stick out.  Using a crimping tool or flat nose pliers gently squeeze the crimp bead closed, so that the beads do not fall off.

Open the jump ring using flat nose pliers, ensure that you open the jump ring sideways in order to retain the shape of the circle. Attach it to one of the ends of the wire and add the clasp, then close the jump ring.  Attach the other jump ring to the other end of the wire and close.

Extension Chains

Do you have a necklace that you can't wear because it's too short? If so, this gold plated extender chain may well be the solution. It's about 6cm long.

The kit includes a gold plated jump ring which can be used to attach the extension chain to your necklace.

To use the jump rings, open the ring sideways, this is easier if you have two pairs of pliers and can grip the ring either side of the opening. Gently pull one side towards you whilst holding the other side still. Remember not to open the jump ring more than you need, as you don't want to distort the shape.

Open your necklace and thread the end (the opposite end to the clasp) on to the jump ring and then add the extension chain. You can then close the jump ring up again.
